Monday, April 14th - Blue Room Luncheon - Eric
Mazur, Physics Department at Harvard will be giving a talk on, "The Scientific
Approach to Teaching: Research as a Basis for Course Design." Discussions of
teaching -- even some publications -- abound with anecdotal evidence. Our
intuition often supplants a systematic, scientific approach to finding out what
works and what doesn't work. Yet, research is increasingly demonstrating that
our gut feelings about teaching are often wrong. In this talk I will discuss
some research my group has done on gender issues in science courses and on the
effectiveness of classroom demonstrations. Frank Blue Room, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday, April
15th - Workshop - "Team Teaching of Interdisciplinary Courses,"
Michael Green, Department of Philosophy, Eleanor Brown, Department
of Economics, Ann Davis, Department of Philosophy and Laura Hoopes, Department
of Biology and Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee team taught
interdisciplinary courses last fall. They would love to talk with you if you’ve
tried this and have good ideas, and are willing to share their experiences and
current insights with anyone who would like to try this and hasn’t done so
already. Pomona Faculty, Smith Campus Center, Room 201, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
